Florence + The Machine – Sympathy Magic
Florence + The Machine drops “Sympathy Magic” just days before “Everybody Scream” arrives this Friday. The third single from the upcoming album hits harder than the previous releases, building from swirling strings to hammering beats that demand volume.
Florence Welch worked on this one with Aaron Dessner and Danny L. Harle. That’s a weird combo on paper, but it works. Dessner brings the orchestration while Harle adds the electronic punch. Welch’s vocals cut through all of it, especially when she reaches the chorus: “So come on, tear me wide open / ‘Til I’m losing my mind / ‘Til I cannot contain it.”
The lyrics deal with identity and transformation. Welch sings about not recognising her face, about scars that fade but pull inside. She wrote the album after lifesaving surgery during the Dance Fever tour, an ectopic pregnancy that brought her close to death. That experience colours everything here. “The closest I came to making life was the closest I came to death,” she said in a recent interview.
Autumn de Wilde directed the video. It’s nearly seven minutes of windswept highlands and theatrical imagery. Welch appears with four other women, exploring themes of physicality and sisterhood. The video goes full gothic romance and isn’t shy about it.
“Everybody Scream” releases October 31 and features contributions from IDLES’ Mark Bowen, Mitski, and Dave Bayley from Glass Animals. Welch wrote and produced it with this tight circle after exploring spiritual mysticism, witchcraft, and folk horror during her recovery. The album examines femininity, aging, partnership, and death.
Florence + The Machine kicks off a North American tour April 8 in Minneapolis with Rachel Chinouriri, Sofia Isella, CMAT, and Mannequin Pussy on select dates. European dates start in February with Paris Paloma supporting all shows.
